A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly throwing a 3-year-old boy into a crocodile enclosure at a Cambridgeshire zoo.

The toddler is in a critical but stable condition. Police say the suspect and victim were strangers and detectives from the Major Crime Unit are investigating it.

Det Insp Verity McCann said: “At this stage, we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances.

“We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other.

“Officers are supporting the boy’s family at hospital, and our thoughts remain with them.”

Jamie Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, have been jailed over the death and sexual abuse of 13-month-old Preston Davey.

Former teacher Jamie Varley has been sentenced to a whole life order, and the judge said he will never be released from prison.

He was convicted of murder, two counts of assault by penetration, five counts of child cruelty, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, 13 counts of taking indecent photos or videos of a child, one count of distributing an indecent photo of a child to his partner, and one count of making an indecent photo.

John McGowan-Fazakerley has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

He was found guilty of allowing the death of a child, two counts of child cruelty, and one count of sexual assault of a child.
