Karl Lagerfeld left his beloved Birman cat Choupette at least $1.5 million (£1.1 million) in his will when he died in 2019, so she could continue the jet-set life of private planes, personal chefs and designer bowls he gave her.

But seven years later the now 14-year-old cat is reportedly broke and living modestly in a shared apartment with Lagerfeld’s former housekeeper Françoise Cacote and her family.

Cacote says they have received “absolutely nothing” from the inheritance and she is now working part-time to support Choupette.

French law prevents animals from inheriting directly and Lagerfeld’s $150 million estate is tied up in court battles, with claims he was of unsound mind when the will was written.

Cacote has hired expensive lawyers to fight for the money in the cat’s name so she can honour the designer’s wishes.

Should the cat have got the money?
