Anti-American acts harm our bilateral relationship. The United States has provided billions of taxpayer dollars in assistance to Somalia. Most notably, the good faith of the American people has long supported military action against terrorist organizations which threaten the United States and, most directly, target the Somali people. The U.S. Embassy appreciates the Federal Government of Somalia’s quick response and decisive actions following a video of individuals in the Somali Security Forces desecrating the American flag. Malfeasant actors who seek to tarnish Somalia’s relationship with the United States harm the Somali people and must continue to be held accountable.
The soldiers of somaliland send here thankful Israel 🇮🇱 and their pm @netanyahu and his people we never forget for your fruitful decision to recognised somaliland thank you Israel
You can see how public diplomacy works in this video and other versions, which spread widely across social media.
The US Embassy was forced to respond publicly and reiterate the same point Somalilanders have been making: why spend millions funding a largely Anti-American country?
Accountability does not end with arresting the individuals in the video. Back in Washington, experts are now questioning Hillary Clinton’s failed and humiliating “Single Somalia” policy.
Engagement with Somaliland is important. However, it would have been more prudent for the UK to send a senior FCDO official rather than the Ambassador accredited to Somalia. That would have acknowledged Somaliland's distinct political reality while avoiding diplomatic ambiguity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland is pleased to announce the 2026 Somaliland Diaspora Week Conference, taking place 2–6 August 2026 in Hargeisa, Borama, and Burco.

Fun Fact.
The Republic of Somaliland is older than many African and even European nations in their modern forms. It first gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, and history should remember it. Recognition is long overdue.
Amb @CharlesKingFCDO and President @Abdirahmanirro discussed the #UK’s longstanding engagement in #Somaliland. We’re proud to support efforts on security, democratisation and development. We welcomed the President’s continued commitment to peace and stability.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro's administration continues its diplomatic outreach with the objective of expanding Somaliland's international recognition and strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships. #Somaliland#Diplomacy#Africa
A highly intriguing diplomatic encounter in Paris!
The Israeli Ambassador to France met with the Somaliland Representative during Israel’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.
Congratulations to the newly elected Chairman of the House of Elders (Guurti) of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Muse H. Abdi Ducaale, who was today elected by the members of the House of Elders.
Chairman Muse H. Abdi Ducaale, is respected and experienced elder distinguished by wisdom, competence and leadership.
Similarly, I commend Mr. Saleebaan Mohamoud Adan, the former Chairman of the House of Elders of the Republic of Somaliland, who today voluntarily stepped down after many years of leading the House and a long political career marked by dedication, statesmanship, and exemplary service as a traditional elder.
I pray for Speaker Saleebaan's continued good health and a long life. I am confident that he will remain a distinguished elder whose counsel, wisdom, and example will continue to be sought for years to come.
If, ever since the Obama admin made the mistake of recognizing the #Somalia🇸🇴 failed state regime, @US2SOMALIA had been more zealous about #USA🇺🇸 interests instead of coddling the spoiled brats with delusions of a “one Somalia” policy, it might not have come to this. Pathetic!🤮
Another video appears to show a Somali soldier stepping on the U.S. flag. If authentic, this raises serious questions about whether the previous incident was truly isolated. Coming after Minister Fiqi's statement and the U.S. decision to halt UNSOM funding. #US#Somali#Africa
