Kenyan Brewery takes big awards in African Beer Cup
In 2018, Eoin Flinn settled in Kikuyu town to begin building a craft brewery. Coming from Ireland, Flinn grew up drinking a lot of Guinness.
“We realised there were few choices of beers in the Kenyan market and we wanted to create more natural beers and a wider variety of flavors” he says.
They began brewing and every week made a new beer which they sold through the tap room in the Kikuyu brewery. One week they put out a Belgian Tripel. Locals loved the beer and drank the entire brew in a single weekend. They told Flinn “This thing tastes like Muratina”
“I was embarrassed to admit, even though I was working in Kikuyu and had been in Kenya for ten years I had never even tasted Muratina!” Flinn tried the local brew and his mind was blown. “I was like, why do we not see this everywhere? In Ethiopia, everyone knows about Tej, but here we have an even better honey wine, natural, crafted, and yet no one is talking about it?”
“Our beer is a Belgium Tripel (“mara tatu”) inspired by Muratina, so we decided to call it Muratatu,” he says. As he began speaking with Muratina brewers in the area he learned more about the history. “We still have colonial laws in this country whereby traditional brewers are prohibited from branding their products and selling in trade. I hope that situation changes”
Now Muratatu is receiving international recognition as it took a silver medal and was voted overall the #2 Belgian beer in all of Africa at the Africa Beer Cup in Cape Town last month. The competition is the most rigorous of it’s kind on the continent with 52 international judges flying in for 3 days of blind tasting. Another 254 brand, Sand Trap also came second in the IPA category, the first time in the history of the event that the award has gone outside of South Africa. Elsewhere in East Africa, Crafty Dees in Dar Es Salaam picked up some bronze medals in the dark lager and Belgian categories, and Club Pilsner picked up a silver medal in the International Lager category.
“We were shocked honestly” says Flinn about the awards. “But we’ve been working hard for 5 years, we’ve brought in international brew masters to train our young team, and this was really validation of the progress we’ve made.”
