In Texas if you protest against the illegal kidnappings of your neighbors, you’ll get sentenced to 50 years in prison because the judge wants to “send a message to anyone who shares a similar ideology.”
Egregious.
the Prairieland convictions mean: if your ideology puts you in opposition to the state, there’s now a framework for making said opposition a federal crime. quotidian protest stuff is evidence of terrorism is someone around you does something the government *decides* is violent.

the trial was a bit of a farce (first attempt was declared a mistrial because the defense attorney wore a shirt w MLK Jr on it under her blazer) and the Trump appointed judge fined the defense for filing routine discovery motions. he also kept a very tightly closed courtroom
one person was charged with attempted murder for the shot officer. but 18 other people got swept up in the case - some who weren’t even there! charged with things like deleting a group chat or helping someone find a ride or *moving a box of pamphlets*
on July 4 last year about a dozen people held a noise demonstration outside the Prairieland ICE facility. police showed up, escalated the situation, and a lot of shots were fired. one cop was shot and released from the hospital after a day.
the terrorist “organization” in question? antifa, which literally just means being against fascism, and is not an organization of any kind. the government convicted people of materially supporting….a vibe. an ideology
first, to be clear, this prosecution was a test from the Trump administration to see if they could convict protesters of terrorism for showing up to a demonstration, and they succeeded.
if you’ve ever worn black to a protest, used Signal, or carried a first aid kit, a federal jury just decided that can all be evidence of terrorism. a quick thread on the Prairielands convictions from last week, and what they mean for the right to protest in the US:
