Bringing this commemoration to Lejja is intentional, as it affirms the truth that heritage is best protected by the communities who sustain it.
Join us to learn, reflect, and support the protection of this remarkable and important heritage landscape.

invites you to an event themed NCHEKWABA: Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Crisis
The event is scheduled as follows:
Date: Saturday, April 18, 2026
Time: 11:00 AM (Prompt)
Venue: Otobo Dunoks, Lejja Community, Nsukka LGA, Enugu State
In response, the Centre for Memories, in collaboration with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Art Focus Foundation, Afrochives Studio, UNN Archeology Department, Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Nature (FOPCHEN), and other partners
Beyond its archaeological importance, the story of Lejja lives on - in oral traditions, ritual practices, and indigenous knowledge systems that continue to shape the community's life and identity.
As the world marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS) 2026, under the theme “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters,” attention turns to places like Lejja.
Lejja is one of the oldest iron-smelting communities in West Africa. For over 2,000 years, it has preserved knowledge, memory, and tradition.
Today, like many heritage sites globally, it faces growing threats: from environmental change to shifting social realities.
