Earlier this year I was contacted by a certain school district because they needed help translating for ‘a native speaker who only speaks Lenca.’
Lenca languages have been considered ‘extinct’ since the late 60s/70s. So this was obv a huge shock to me as a Lenca/Lenca linguist

After many months of ghosting I feel like this was never true. Maybe someone lied to get out of something, or someone was mistaken, perhaps it was several people who were mistaken. Don’t know. It’s frustrating but in the back of my head I knew it might be too good to be true.

Another language keeper has passed to the other side . Rest In Peace Marie Wilcox. I did not know her personally, but her story inspired me and countless others to continue with our own language work.
