💡@The_GEMProject followed up healthy people with high risk of Crohn's for 8.5 years and found ⬆️ ß-glucan and inulin intake were associated with:
🔸Preserved gut barrier function
🔸⬇️ inflammation
🔸⬇️ CD risk
When looking at 94 first-degree relatives (parents, siblings or children) who went on to develop the disease themselves from a pool of 3,314 individuals over a median of 8.5 years:
✅ ⬆️ beta-glucan (found in oats, barley, grains) and inulin (found in garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus) intake was protective of subsequent Crohn’s, each associated with around a 30% reduction in risk
✅ ⬆️ beta-glucan and inulin intakes were linked to:
🔸A ⬇️ in Ruminococcus torques, a species previously identified as the highest contributor to GEM Crohn’s disease microbiome risk
🔸⬇️ C-reactive protein (but not with changes in fecal calprotectin)
🔸⬇️ gut permeability
✅ ⬇️ intake of pectin, inulin, FOS, and beta-glucan was linked to impaired intestinal permeability and subclinical inflammation, while ⬇️ inulin intake was associated with ⬆️ fecal calprotectin levels
🌾🧅Don't underestimate the power of fermentable dietary fiber to reduce the risk of #Crohns among first-degree relatives of patients with the condition
