A Business Improvement District (BID) is an area for which a local authority charges an additional surcharge to business rates.
A BID company contracts with the local authority to deliver the BID arrangements, supplying services to the local authority.

What do people think of a 'tourist tax' to stay in Harrogate? Well it could be a reality as had it confirmed by unhappy hotels that being looked at right now by @BidHarrogate & @HarrogateHTA.
FYI @Grumblerh@HgateAdvertiser@thestrayferret, does Harrogate want a tourist tax?
@TristanCorkPost Yep, quite right, imposing another BID levy on hotels but not Airbnb's is not right. This is a reason why other Accommodation BID's have been rejected.

Councillors agreed a Lib Dem budget amendment to look into a tourist tax. Councils don’t have the power to do it in England, but could use the Business Improvement District system as a workaround.

@TristanCorkPost An accommodation BID tourist tax will not be payable by Airbnb's, such a tourist tax work around is unfair and unequitable, as as we've seen rejected in Cambridge and Bournemouth.
Sacking and resignation as power struggle erupts inside flagship city centre project.
Westside BID represents businesses in Broad Street and surrounding parts of the city centre - it's been in the midst of an internal power struggle just as its future is on the line.

@WarrOnWords@lever_colin@bailiwickxpress Gibraltar created BID legislation and businesses were duped into a BID through a ballot, but when businesses realised what was going with this new tax it turned bad and the BID was canned. Google it.
@WarrOnWords@lever_colin@bailiwickxpress As page 28 of the report says: "A BID would secure long-term funding for the Retail Sector and the improvements we will need to deliver for St Helier"
By secure funding they mean tax the 900 retail business that that account for half of Jersey GST, what a cheek!
So what effect is the Business Improvement District(BID) initiative having? I get copied into a news latter each week extoling its virtues, but it only appears to be PR with little material benefit #rdguk
@ElitePropertyLn Let's remember that this will only be a voluntary scheme, no accommodation business can be compelled to charge it, and equally tyere is no legal basis to demand it of customers. It will simply be a supplementary charge.
