Using the history of your building to trace Berlin's modern past and the dissolution of your marriage. I learned a lot about Berlin but not as much about the author as I would have liked - other than that she has some odd, esoteric beliefs.

1/23 Wherein we learn that David Sedaris' wealth has made him a largely out-of-touch prick but that he also had a masochistic father. The final scene had me in tears, which was unfortunate because I was on a full train and I must have looked like a psychopath.

6/21 I read somewhere that this is one of the best sports novels ever and that somehow led me to buy it, which is odd but sailing always seemed intriguing(?). A great historic thriller with unexpected British editorializing from before the world wars.

5/21 A classic buddy story with a comedy writer and photojournalist pretending not to be (they wouldn't have been allowed in) as they tour a dumb country. Meticulously written and funny and interesting - a solid read.

4/21 Stumbled into this book because I loved the author's first book. I had no idea it was a metaphor for how the real Berlin was killed by international money and that it died the day Tempelhof closed -- too Berlin-obsessed and a bit overwritten.

3/21 Coming to terms with your father's death in a book that often felt too superficial. The story seemed to keep my attention anyway and there's a glaring error about German journalism in a key scene.

A memoire about growing up Black and gay in small-town Texas. Includes just the most important scenes and could have done with a few not-quite-so-important scenes to give him and the book depth.

1/21 Halfway through I wondered about Stamm's misogyny but in the end I was surprised that it's actually a very skillful book about relationships and desires.

A collection of supposedly true cases from the life of a German defense attorney. I hope Von Schirach is a better attorney than author because his pen isn't deft enough to hide that fact that his stories are too smooth and Hollywood to be true (Claas Relotius lässt grüssen).

Packed with details and characters (and tragedy), @CathyHickley 's writing makes it easy to understand who everyone is and why the details are important. A complex, subtle truth that demonstrates why governments need to work better and more quickly on restitution/research.

The first 300 pages of this (German-language) young adult novel don't feel young adult and are as charming as exciting. The 100+ page denoument got tiresome and please don't ask me about the ending but those first 300 are some of the best pages I've ever read.

The more novels I read about between-the-wars Berlin, the more they feel the same. Am I alone in thinking Herr Isherwood and Sally Bowles were awful, conceited bores?
