A company never cares about its customers more than the CEO. The CEO sets the standard.
When you lose a customer, if the CEO doesn't care, the company won't either.
When a customer is unhappy, if the CEO doesn't care, the company won't either.
Why don't many CEO's care more?
It's not because they don't think customers are important, they definitely do. It's because CEOs have a lot of responsibilities that are all important. Here are just a few of those responsibilities that can take away from making the customer preeminent:
- managing an executive team
- hiring and retention of talent
- raising equity
- managing equity investors
- product roadmap/development
- sales and marketing leadership
- overall corporate strategy
- raising debt
- managing lenders
- board management
- capital markets (M&A/public markets)
- business development
- selling
- supply chain management
- financial reporting/analytics
- sales/distribution channel management
- competitive assessment
- capital allocation
- cost management
- and many more
It's easy to let all of these and other responsibilities take a CEO's focus away from customers - which then can easily lead to the entire company not being as focused on customers as well.
However, if in the midst of all of these responsibilities, a CEO is still doing customer service calls, still fighting to win back churned customers, still engaging to and listening to existing customers, still putting the customer first in every departmental discussion, still setting the right KPIs and cultural benchmarks around customer delight, still focused on more deeply understanding their customers and elevating them in front of the company at every turn - that tells everyone in the company that the CEO cares about the customer first and foremost, and the company will follow.
The truly customer-centric CEO will routinely reinforce through their actions and words that the customer is paramount despite managing many other important priorities.
