The Maulana Azad National Urdu University Students’ Union has backed Jamia Millia Islamia students demanding the restoration of an elected students’ union, which has been absent for nearly two decades.

At MANUU, Union Secretary Hazra reportedly argued that Jamia’s Muslim identity has contributed to the “targeting and criminalisation” of its students.

But why must a university’s religious identity become the defining narrative of a student movement?

Publicly funded institutions must uphold constitutional values, equal treatment and academic freedom, not allow religious identity to overshadow them.

India’s Constitution guarantees religious freedom and equality. Shouldn’t Central-funded universities put these shared constitutional values above religious identity? 🇮🇳

In an interview, city mayor Artem Semenikhin stated that, amid a days-long blackout, the city is now running out of even the diesel fuel needed for generators.

He also described the total destruction of local energy infrastructure:

“I have personally visited the destroyed facilities; they are effectively completely demolished — beyond any possibility of repair. At night, we manage to restore power — at best — to the hospital and, if we’re lucky, the water utility; the rest of the residents remain without electricity,” Semenikhin reported.
