Sometimes twitter is like diving into a cool pool on a hot summers day.
Other times a nice warm bath. Nice people. Nice vibe.
Sometimes it's like jumping into the surf. Fun if you know how to swim.
More often it's like sharing a spa with 12 strangers and a floating band aid.
Time to put the lazy “China runs on coal” talking point to bed, especially the claim that coal is powering its latest electricity growth.
Between 2015 and 2025, solar’s share of China’s electricity generation grew 16.4 times. Wind’s grew 3.35 times. Together, they went from 3.9% to 21.9% of generation.
Coal’s share fell from 70% to 54.8%. By the first half of 2026, it was below half, at 49.7%.
Coal remains a major source, and its total output grew over that decade. But China isn’t just keeping up with rising electricity demand. In 2025, growth in clean electricity exceeded the increase in total demand, allowing coal generation to fall even as electricity consumption grew.
China is expanding electricity supply to support its rapidly electrifying economy, including transport, manufacturing and growing demand from AI data centres.
That is what the tired coal argument misses. Look at what is supplying the growth, how quickly the mix is changing, and where the investment is going.
China is building a different electricity system while its critics keep recycling the same talking points. Results and economics are doing the heavy lifting.
Meeting rising demand requires generation, grids and storage built at speed. Solar, wind and batteries offer a fast, scalable way to deliver that. Protecting fossil fuel interests or using promises of future nuclear as an excuse to block renewable deployment just wastes time and hands competitors a bigger lead.
You cannot power an electrifying economy with slogans.

Someone needs to explain to you folk down here what November temps are supposed to be in Australia. Twas 31° in Brissie when I left. Currently a crisp 7.5°
Someone should tell folk OS thinking of retiring in Australia that we live in *checks notes* a desolate hell hole filled with machete wielding gangs, rampant pestilence & abject poverty.
