The power of celebrity cuts both ways.
A generation grew up knowing that the Leader was the *only* Leader. They were told Nehru was terrible, the past was terrible; the freedom struggle was *crickets*. Even other stalwarts from the saffron brigade were steadily erased. Gen Z has no organic memories of the roaring 1990s, the energy of the 2000s. The one thing they knew for sure: the future was bright. Acche din was a fervent promise.
Like Big Brother, the Leader was everywhere. On 24 x 7 TV, in newspapers, at petrol pumps, on billboards, at bus-stands, in their homes, on their phones, on their parents' phones, on socmedia, Covid certificates, cement sacks etc etc. Towering, omnipresent, inescapable.
So when colour drains from the present and the future, when everything is a mess, when corruption is openly celebrated — there is no question about who's responsible. Gen Z knows who to blame. (And meme.)
Personality cults trip over this one all the time. Retire the Leader and everything crumbles, keep him out there, and he's a visible reminder of every broken promise, every bruise, every insult. Fun and games, friends, fun and games.
Best part of being a Lewis Hamilton fan is that you get to experience absolutely stunning highs like these and even when things are rough, he is still the most successful driver in F1 history.
