@DavQuinn As for the subject of change of ethos, there is majority local support for change in 14% of schools.
That means at least 400. Even if you halved that figure, you'd IMMEDIATELY more than double the number of Educate Together schools in Ireland (currently 172).
@DavQuinn The 1st thing in the Bishops' report is an admission that there is "significant support" for change from "single-sex to co-ed schools". There's actually majority demand for change in 240 single-sex schools.
There are about 450 single-sex schools in Ireland.
@DavQuinn 95.1% of primary schools are under denominational control, while less than 60% of parents (likely much fewer than that) actually want that situation to continue.
@DavQuinn This is Junior Cert-level political commentary. The contrast is not subtle, but neither is it very surprising or even all that striking. Politico balances its message with the sub-headline, making its overall message not all that different from the Irish Times.
@StPatri88801243@DavQuinn@CourierClicks Apart altogether from the fact that it's utterly irrelevant ... except to the extent that your beloved Church was effectively running the State during most of the relevant period.
@DavQuinn@CourierClicks More whataboutery.
And singularly weird whataboutery at that, as it was your ugly lot who were effectively running the State for such an immensely long time.
@DavQuinn@TalksWild Whataboutery.
Look at them! What they're doing is wrong and therefore what we were doing is somehow less wrong.
This comment is as illogical as it is morally illiterate.
@DavQuinn@Liamo10858 He isn't.
I was a pupil at Blackrock College. I'm only finding out now from my fellow pupils that it was far worse than I imagined at the time.
I'm 60.
@DavQuinn There is only one answer to this bizarre comment:
When people have found out against powerful odds that you've been raping & abusing children and actively facilitating & covering up child rape & abuse, those people aren't inclined to look at the positive side of the ledger.
@MaryKenny4 You're not doing your readers of X a favour, as O'Connor's article is behind a paywall. And if you're not paraphrasing O'Connor accurately, you're not doing him any favours either. Especially as the article is behind a paywall.
You should quote him honestly and in context.
@DavQuinn A country run by a religious establishment is a theocracy, by no matter what mechanisms it exercises that control, David.
It's quite obvious that during the 50s and 60s the clerics had far more than just informal "influence". They ran the place.
