At a recent concert of yours, you asked two fans who had been brought on stage where they were from. When they responded with “Israel,” they were met with boos from the crowd. Instead of supporting them and treating them like you would any other fans – with dignity, respect, and kindness – you made them feel conditionally tolerated, dehumanized, and guilty of being Jewish.

For centuries, Jews inside and outside Israel have been treated and made to feel impure, less than, and devalued. During the Holocaust, the Nazis referred to us as rats. Our slaughterers – from Castile, to Hebron, Baghdad, Kielce and Be'eri – viewed us as sub-human to justify the killing. So, when you sit there and say “We are treating you as equal humans on earth, regardless of where you come from,” you aren’t, in fact, doing something righteous – you’re looking at those girls in the face and saying “We know you aren’t equal, nor human, but tonight, we can pretend you are.”

To make matters worse, you then did something so many like you have been taught to do for decades. You had to bring up Palestine. In your mind, Jewish existence is premised on Palestinian dispossession, deprivation, and despair. To acknowledge Jewish life without also acknowledging Palestinian life would be sacrilege to someone like you. It’s why when Jews are attacked – so many have the kneejerk reaction to bring up “Islamophobia.” Even Jewish trauma must be equitable.

What should have been a night of celebration, awe, and excitement was likely turned into an evening of humiliation, confusion, and sadness because you lack even the most basic understanding of the things you preach.

The next time you come across Jews or Israelis – please – for the love of God – do better.
