In which I explain the extraordinary energy density of nuclear power using the world‘s most famous equation E=MC2.
Start with a 100 tonne fuel load in a 1 GW PWR.
We fission 3kg of heavy metal per day.
Everyday 3g of that mass is transformed into energy.
According to E=MC2 thats 3g x the speed of light 300 million m/s squared.
3g x 90,000,000,000,000,000 m2/s2 equals a lot of Joules.
Expressed in more familiar terms for the power sector thats 75GWh thermal or 24GWh electric.
So to summarize that 3g/day powers 1 million homes every day for 18 months.

There’s an old saying among aviators: every landing that you can walk away from, counts as a good landing. 🛬
And every landing that you can walk away from and the aircraft is still airworthy, counts as a great landing! 😎

Finnair is canceling some flights and performing inspections on 8 of its A321s because the seat covers on those aircraft were cleaned using water. https://t.co/ZiaseyLPaB
My greatest hope for today is the trade situation with Switzerland is worked out quickly. The Swiss have always been great partners in Medicine, Foreign Affairs and even Chocolate. Let’s get this done.
@BR_Sprecher
At 6:13 AM UTC, Daher TBM-940 D-FSAM departed Buochs runway 24, flew a short circuit, and landed back on runway 06 at 6:31. Soon after, it took off again at 7.37 from runway 24 and crashed into Lake Lucerne at 7.41. Search and rescue ongoing. NOTAM issued: Buochs (LSZC) CLSD.
Peak Oshkosh yesterday as controllers handled more than 2,200 flights at #OSH25. Check out this time lapse of flights at @EAA#AirVenture. Headed to Oshkosh for the final weekend? We'll be there all day Saturday, July 26. Find us at the Forum stage 3 at 11:30. Happy tracking!
✈️ Altimeter Settings Explained!
Navigating the skies means switching between two pressure settings: QNH and STD. But when and why? Let’s break it down ⬇️
🔸 Transition Altitude (TA):
➡️ Climbing? Set your altimeter from QNH to STD at this point.
(You move from altitude to Flight Level 📶)
🔸 Transition Level (TL):
⬅️ Descending? Switch from STD back to QNH here.
(You return to altitude reference based on local pressure 🌍)
🌤️ The transition layer in between ensures no altitude busts between climbing and descending traffic.
 Standard Pressure = 1013.25 hPa / 29.92 inHg

✈️ Mid-Air Collision Avoidance: Know the Rules of the Sky!
Pilots must apply right-of-way rules to stay safe and predictable during flight:
🟩 Converging: The aircraft on the right has the right-of-way.
🟥 Head-on: Both aircraft turn right to avoid.
🟦 Same path: The overtaken aircraft has the right-of-way.
⚠️ Never overtake by climbing, descending, or cutting in front of the aircraft with right-of-way.
🧠 These are ICAO-standard procedures every pilot must know — because reaction time at 120+ knots is short!

Thunderstorms pose a very real risk to aviation and require the utmost respect from pilots
Thunderstorms typically have 3 stages:
The Developing Stage
The Mature Stage
The Dissipating Stage
Developing Stage: Warm, moist air rises rapidly. Strong updrafts form towering cumulus clouds. No rain yet but the energy is building and severe turbulence can be expected.
Mature Stage: The storm peaks. Heavy rain, lightning, hail, and updrafts and downdrafts mix - this is the most dangerous phase.
Dissipating Stage: Downdrafts dominate. Rain slows. But turbulence and wind shear can still linger for miles.
As a good rule of thumb, pilots aim to stay a minimum of 20 nautical miles upwind of a storm cell to avoid any potential surrounding turbulence.
Here’s why:
✅ Extreme turbulence - Strong up & down drafts can exceed structural limits.
✅ Hail & lightning - Can damage windows, radomes and engines.
✅ Radar blind spots - Storms can mask each other, and radar attenuation makes flying into the heart of one even riskier.
Have you ever experienced turbulence from a thunderstorm?
