This chart is highly misleading because it compares completely different datasets and legal metrics.
The UK metric: The 12,183 figure tracks initial arrests under the Communications Act, which mostly covers stalking, domestic harassment, revenge porn, and hoax emergency calls—not political opinions. Only about 1,100 resulted in actual convictions.
The other countries: Authoritarian regimes like China, Iran and Russia do not release transparent police custody logs. Their low numbers only reflect verified human rights cases, drastically undercounting their actual crackdowns on speech.
