Education systems in the Middle East face deep structural complexity: centralized policy with slow implementation, competing mandates, outdated curricula, overloaded teachers, public-private quality gaps, and now imported AI frameworks and tools introduced without sufficient contextualization and training. Meaningful progress requires not only innovation, but a holistic approach that builds institutional readiness, strategic guidance, and ensures change is understood and aligned at every level.

The rapid introduction of AI into schools risks narrowing education to tool use, at the expense of critical thinking, agency, and resilience young people need to navigate uncertainty. AI tools can support personalization, assessment, and instruction, but without literacy, governance, and pedagogical guardrails, they can erode independent thinking and reduce learning depth. The question is no longer whether AI will change education. It is whether systems are equipping learners to preserve their judgment, agency, and humanity within that change.

AI literacy is no longer optional. It is essential for every learner in any school system. It is not about pushing learners to use more tools, but helping them understand how AI works, when to rely on it, and when to question it. The more we understand AI, the more we can protect human cognition, preserve learning integrity, and use technology in productive, ethical, and pedagogically sound ways.

@CONNECTED_MENA, a mission-driven organization, is built in response to a clear regional reality: different school archetypes, levels of digital maturity, governance conditions, and institutional pressures. Education here requires more than imported content and surface-level training. It requires a sophisticated, context-responsive, and human-centered approach.

We are pioneering a culturally grounded approach to AI literacy in MENA education. Our framework draws on the OECD, AI4K12, CSTA, ISTE, and UNESCO standards, and is purposefully shaped by the educational, cultural, and governance realities of our region.

We support ministries on AI governance, partner with schools to implement AI literacy curriculum we developed, equip educators through targeted training, and build institution-wide governance systems.

Today, I honor and pay tribute to the mothers who lost their sons in war, the wives of martyrs who protected their families and raised their children while carrying grief, the wives of soldiers living between hope and fear, the female prisoners whose part of the story has never been fully heard, the displaced women in camps who have lost what we call home, the female soldiers who defend their identity and homeland.

The women teachers in conflict zones who continue to open classrooms and educate future generations despite the burdens they carry, the young girls deprived of education, the vulnerable women, the women with disabilities, and all those who remain unseen and unheard across our region and around the world.

I honor the women history overlooks, yet whose quiet strength and endurance preserve hope in the darkest times and hold together the very fabric of our humanity.

Professor @FernandoReimers’ impact extends far beyond the classrooms of @Harvard. He has guided and inspired hundreds of social entrepreneurs and education leaders across the globe to turn ideas into lasting change. I had the privilege of learning from him how to build impactful educational institutions and to design sustainable, innovative interventions. Meeting him again reminded me how powerful it is to be taught by someone who not only changes the way you think about what’s possible but also believes deeply in your potential.

As my journey at @Harvard nears its end, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Harvard University for granting me the Middle East-North Africa Fellowship, an extraordinary opportunity dedicated to people from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, as well as other regional countries, including Tunisia and Yemen. I am honored to have been the first recipient of this fellowship.

This initiative, which covered the cost of my Harvard education, is generously funded by DNO ASA, led by Mr. Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani, Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors.

His visionary leadership has enabled the company to shape the economic landscape of the Kurdistan Region through its contributions to the oil and gas sector.

Today, we analyzed the narratives of former U.S. President George W. Bush and His Excellency @IKRPresident during difficult times. President Barzani’s mastery of redemption narratives, his recognition of crises, and his unique ability to build an empathetic connection—across ethnic and religious differences—truly stand out and are inspirational. His approach not only connects the past, present, and future but also fosters unity and emotional resilience.
