🤝The energy interdependence between🌍Africa and🇨🇳China is one of the single most important and undervalued variable when considering the future of the energy transition
🧵
China again doubled down on solar in the first half of 2025, adding in 6 months more than America has built in its entire history.
They're literally growing at a rate of 2 United States a year.
Which raises an interesting question for the many people out there who, like Trump, believe that "renewables are a joke" and "green energy is a scam".
Year after year, China is doubling down on renewables, now reaching investment levels of an unimaginable scale, investing far more than the rest of the world combined. China isn't exactly "woke" or known as bleeding heart liberals. They're more famous as the world's most hardheaded economic planners.
If they're going all-in on renewables at this scale, investing in it like it's the winning bet of the century, maybe it's worth wondering if maybe the "joke" won't end up being on the ones laughing.
Exciting developments in solar.
Just read this fascinating FT article on perovskite solar panels – the next-gen innovation that's lighter, more flexible, and up to 20% more efficient than traditional silicon ones.
Imagine panels on lampposts, car roofs, or even windows, turning everyday surfaces into power generators.
And great to see that @OxfordPV features in this piece so prominently - a spin off from the @UniofOxford.
China's National Computing+Energy Strategy:
This is the layout for China's national computing strategy. Under the "East Data, West-Computer" 东数西算 slogan, high-priority tasks are handled by local clusters, while lower-priority tasks are outsourced to the energy-rich west.🧵
Very interesting discussion about the challenges (or deadly sins!) of various technological sectors of the energy transition #DAC#H2#biofuels#offshorewind… https://t.co/natiKpMg1M
You heard it here first from Arcane Capital before @TheEconomist ! The #BESS story is going mainstream now. @BainandCompany forecasts the market going from $15bn in 2023 to $200-700bn in 2030 ie up 13-47x. And that's not even accounting for the falling battery prices, i.e. installation volumes could grow even faster than this!
The 2023 global BESS total was around 120GWh. 13-47x growth implies 1.5TWh - 5.6TWh. Clearly I believe the lower range is plausible, that's our BASE case forecast; the upper range would consume ALL the #lithium in the world.
1.5TWh of BESS would consume about 1.1 Mt LCE, or almost the entire lithium supply of 2024. #letthatsinkin
"The IEA reckons that #solar power combined with #batteries is now competitive with #coal-fired #electricity in India, and is on track to be cheaper than #gas-fired power in America in a few years." -- BESS is disrupting all the traditional power generation sources. Those fossil-fuel generators being built today now will need protection via fixed power tariffs, and if the price environment gets changed, they become obsolete immediately.
What The Economist didn't say is that in China, the payback period for commercial BESS is <2 years, and for grid BESS it's <5 years. Without subsidies. There was also news recently about the new city renewal policies to be implemented that involve BESS - that's why battery-maker share prices jumped 10-20% last week. China will also install about 300-500GW of solar per year from 2025 onwards, many of these will come paired with batteries.
In short, BESS demand is growing really FAST!
Jet fuel exports from Asia to Europe hit over 10m barrels in July 2025 — the highest ever. Aviation demand soars, and Europe's reliance deepens.
