Using novel #datascience techniques, our study looked at the effect of critical events on other patients admitted to the same unit.
This study is the first of its kind in #Pediatrics and #PedsICU
#CritCareExplore@SCCM Critical events in the PICU is associated with decreased likelihood of future events in other PICU patients @uw_icu_datasci https://t.co/LjandDDo7q
@ThePICULife We are technically all "in room air". A patient is placed "on oxygen" (hyperbaric chambers excluded). It implies intention and therefore a patient on room air implies the opposite.
Someone on high flow oxygen is still sitting on a bed in room air.
"I strive not to burden my family with the emotional fallout of my profession. They did not choose to live so close to death."
So apt. Often as #PedsICU providers our colleagues are the only ones who truly understand. We must lift each other up.

Mask up!
If you don't want to do it for yourself, do it for your kids. #PedsICU beds are incredibly hard to find this season and children are needing to be transferred out of state for the care they need.
#PedsinCrisis
There are many reasons to be wearing a mask right now. If flu, RSV and covid are not enough, concerns about possible MERS coming back from the Qatar games should do it.
@ilanaPICUdoc Also, super excited at having gotten it right!
I would like to thank @SCCM for the education, #PedsICU for creating this platform, and my mom for all her support.
@ilanaPICUdoc Thanks for an excellent case!
This is a great example of how the ventilator is also an invasive monitoring tool. Loops and scalars should be reviewed not just for troubleshooting but also for diagnostics.
@NidaQadirMD Our friends in the adult ICUs have been stepping up and we appreciate the help!
Pediatricians are used to making things work with limited resources. We got this!
@NidaQadirMD Absolutely! Today is the Monday after a service week in the #PedsICU and I am exhausted!
It's hard enough during a regular week, but with the rise in viral infections there are no beds anywhere which makes it so much harder. We are truly seeing the effects of #PedsInCrisis
@ChrisCarrollMD I find that fixation on the summary statement impedes learning
Trainees are so focused on getting the statement right, they lose sight of the forest for the trees
Instead, I ask them the most active problems, if they're better or not, and how they would like to address each one
Lots of chatter about how great #ChatGPT is and the role AI will play in our lives.
While the things this technology can do are remarkable, it's nice to see that those of us who work in the #PedsICU don't have to worry about job security just yet.
@jbcarmody This thread highlights the exact problem that currently exists in pediatric subspecialty fellowships.
Required academic productivity prolongs training, leads to a greater financial setback and creates undue stress for trainees.
#MedEd should encourage research, not require it.
