Legacy Met who never won anything. Legacy for me is winning titles. Hernandez and Seaver were legacy Mets. Alonso was an unathletic poor defensive 31 year old elite power hitter. Those profiles have historically aged poorly. And the smart play is to not offer 5-year deals to that. It was the smart play. Opens up the position for other flexible options and changes a clubhouse that had issues and again, did not win. This wasn’t the Yankees letting go Bernie Williams or Jeter with multiple titles on their resumes. Mets fans need to stop with this notion that Alonso was a must. He wasn’t. I hope he does great in Baltimore. But if LA can let go of Corey Seager and Washington can let go of Harper, and both win titles after, then we sure as hell can let Alonso walk.
@octoberstanton Did you forget Bo Bichette was added? Or it doesn’t fit your ridiculous narrative. And if you think they’re done then you’re really lost.
We aren’t throwing crazy money around at mid talent like Rogers. Or spending above market for unathletic corner infielders, no matter if they are home grown. I am not moved until the offseason is done. I don’t quit poker games after two bad hands. We’ll be fine. We have the best owner in baseball.
@SLagonia2626@YankeeWRLD They have the top rated farm system in baseball with 7 prospects in the top 100 including 3 starters. They have more than enough. Acuna isn’t even in the top 15 of Mets prospects.
@SleeperMets Terrific baseball move that sets up the rest of the offseason. Fans with little logic applied will cry. That’s expected but you got a premier defensive 2B and now opened up LF for a potentially bigger add.
Making our defense much stronger and filling in a better solution for 2B. Also allows them to package Jett in any trade for a SP. I can think of one in particular. And now LF is open for an upgrade. Tucker would be nice. Also reducing the years of obligation which lines up well for when you would want to start to pay McLean, Baty, Alvarez, Sproat etc. I get the heart strings for Nimmo but that’s not how you run a baseball team. I like the live conditioned on what they do in LF now.
They are not rebuilding. Not with Lindor and Soto locked in. But overhauling their starting staff is a huge plus. McLean is the only certainty. Also CF and 2B need to be priority upgrades. They will trade for, sign and promote all new talent. It’s the right way to come back stronger.
This is how bad deals get done. Emotions overriding logic. You do not sign a player with limited defensive flexibility and an unathletic build to 7 year deals for big money. At 31. Let’s see how his market plays out but when you will need the DH spot for Soto down the line, and you have the top farm system in baseball, you can’t over commit to this position. You need SP, better defense, and better 2B and CF options. Brewers lost their best hitter Adames. Yankees lost Soto. Red Sox traded Devers. All were in the playoffs. Do not ever get so attached that it allows your emotions to cloud judgment. I would let Alonso walk rather than give him 7 years. Without blinking. But I’d allocate the money smartly and use my farm system to fill other gaps. Like Jett for 2B and/or Benge for CF.
Baty is our answer at 3B. He broke thru. Vientos broke through last year. He regressed badly and we need to know if he’s the 2024 or 2025 version. If he is the 2024 version, then he can play 1B and allow us better payroll and positional flexibility. And allocate more $$ to real SP. not Montas or Blackburn quality starters.
And one can argue those were the Cohen moves. Big $$ to seal deals. The others were clearly Stearns risks for potential reward. When you add in the trade deadline and Helsley and Mullins it’s safe to say that Stearns did not have a good season. I like him. But he needs to be a whole lot better. The big contracts are Cohen. The minor league stars were here before him. He needs a much much improved upcoming offseason to get us where we need to be in 2026.
Payroll is not a problem. Disbursement is. Montas was an awful move from the moment it was done. Wasted $$$. Take that money and get a real SP and that would be a better answer. McNeil and Marte aren’t worth their contracts. Benge and Jett as rookies would be better. They will be here next year. As they cycle in the best farm system in baseball, the payroll will settle in better. But signing elite players over gambles and maybes (like Montas, Siri, Madrigal, Stanek, Winker) is always the better approach. Stearns needs to get better with assessing lower cost risks or lose that Milwaukee mindset once and for all.
