Today, I came across news reports which indicate that several charges have been filed against me in Pakistan. These charges – which include aiding, abetting and instigating violence, terrorism and treason – have been filed by a resident of Islamabad, an individual unknown to me. This individual claims that he saw a mob using replica of my social media content to trigger violence, terrorism, and mutiny against the government and the armed forces of Pakistan on the 9th of May, 2023 a tragic day in the recent history of my country (it must be noted that this individual filed the charges more than one month after the unfortunate events of 9th May). This individual also claims that I’m an agent of 'hostile foreign intelligence agencies,' conspiring actively to weaken the government, divide the military, glorify terrorism, attack state institutions and even initiate civil war in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The charges that have been filed include several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including Section 121 (framed against “Waging or attempting to wage war or abetting waging of war against Pakistan”) Section 131 (framed against “Abetting mutiny, or attempting to seduce a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty”) and even the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), specifically reserved for hardened terrorists. These charges, which are punishable by death, are shocking, baseless and absurd. Ironically, the police officer who has filed these charges has told my attorney that this case is not under his ambit, which indicates that some other authorities are handling this matter, possibly extra-legally. I am a proud citizen of Pakistan. Perhaps one of the proudest. I’ve dedicated my career reporting from Pakistan’s frontlines, deployed with the same military that these charges falsely claim I’m trying to divide. I’ve risked my own safety as well as that of my family by reporting about the same terrorists and hostile foreign intelligence agencies that these charges baselessly claim I am conspiring with. I’ve taught and lectured at the same military institutions that these charges deceitfully claim I am trying to destroy. These fallacious charges are part of a larger pattern to stifle the freedom of expression, the freedom of the press, and the freedom of movement in Pakistan. In fact, they are just the latest step in a series of maneuvers to curb the larger process of democracy in Pakistan. I will fight these charges through due process, ably managed by Pakistan’s courageous judiciary. My fight will be easy, as these charges are weak, concocted and misleading. I will not stop, as these charges are meant to intimidate me into stopping my reporting about the plight of millions of Pakistanis. Also, I will not fight alone. Surely, I can count on the support of millions of Pakistanis – regular citizens, fellow journalists, and the honorable judiciary – who will continue to stand bravely for a moral and upright society, where justice, fairplay and transparency will survive and thrive.
