New York’s vaccine mandate is now at the centre of a major religious-freedom battle involving Amish families.

For decades, New York allowed religious exemptions from school vaccination requirements. That changed in 2019, when the state repealed the exemption, leaving Amish families who object to vaccination on religious grounds facing the same school requirements as other children.

Several Amish parents and Amish community schools challenged the law, arguing that it interferes with their sincerely held religious beliefs and way of life. Their schools have also faced fines for failing to comply with the vaccination requirements.

On June 30, 2026, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld New York’s law again, finding that the vaccination requirement is a neutral law that applies generally to schoolchildren and that it does not violate the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause.

The Amish families have now returned to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking the justices to hear the case.

Their lawyers, including First Liberty Institute, argue that the consequences could be severe enough to force Amish families to leave New York rather than abandon their religious practices. First Liberty says the Amish have lived in New York for generations and are asking to continue practising their faith there.

Whatever your views on vaccination, this case raises a much bigger constitutional question:

How far can a state go when a public-health requirement conflicts with a sincerely held religious belief?

And now the U.S. Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether it will take up the Amish families’ challenge.
