Jaapi – the Traditional Bamboo Hat of Assam on display at the Assam State Zone of India Pavilion - Bharat - at Osaka Expo
The Jaapi is Assam’s iconic conical hat, crafted from bamboo and tokou paat (palm leaves). Traditionally worn by farmers as protection from the sun and rain, the jaapi also holds a place of honor when presented ceremonially as a mark of respect. Beyond its practical use, the jaapi reflects the simplicity, dignity, and artistic excellence of Assamese handcraft. Today, it proudly stands as a cultural symbol of Assam and its rich heritage of bamboo weaving.
