Kenya-Ghana diplomatic relations are strong, cordial and dynamic, dating back to the pre-independence days and the enduring partnership between the founding fathers of our two nations.

Ties between our two peoples have been boosted by five State Visits on both sides, and the expanding air links through Kenya Airways and the advanced plans to make Accra our airline's hub in West Africa.

Our cooperation in trade and investment, tourism, education, and science and technology, among others, is underwritten by various memoranda of understanding.

Intra-African trade stands at a low 15 per cent of the continent's total trade compared to 60 per cent in Europe and Asia. For our continent to unlock its vast potential, create opportunities and wealth for citizens, and drive inclusive prosperity, Africa must trade more with itself.

But Africa is taking steps to improve trade with itself, especially with the coming into force of the African Continental Free Trade Area. It is estimated that Intra-African trade could exponential rise to 50 per cent by 2035. This would create immense wealth, generate millions of decent jobs, increase opportunities for small businesses and open new markets for local goods and services.

But for this to materialise, Africa must reform and revitalise agriculture, reform the global credit rating system in addition to setting up an African one, and provide a platform for the private sector to play a progressive role.

Spoke at the Economic Pillar on Trade and Investment at TICAD 9 meeting in Yokohama City, Japan, on the second day of the summit.

Relations between countries and cities are essentially about people. Cultural exchanges, including music, drama, art, sports and education programmes, break down stereotypes and help make citizens become formidable ambassadors of their own countries.

Ties between Kenya and Yokohama City have been strengthened by the relationship between Yokohama Commercial School and Alliance School. This partnership is aimed at fostering global leaders and cultural understanding.

Addressed the Yokohama City Council Assembly in the presence of Yokohama City Council President Takeshi Shibuya and Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka.

Kenya and Japan have a strong and cordial partnership that goes back 60 years. Our trade has grown exponentially in that period, with trade growing by 33 per cent in 2024. However, the trade relationship is heavily in favour of Japan.

Held a meeting with Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba ahead of the opening of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, Yokohama City.

Expressed the need for Japan to deal with tariff and non-tariff barriers so that Kenyan agricultural produce, including avocados and tea, can get more access to the Japanese market.

Thanked Japan for support in renewable energy and infrastructure development in many parts of our country. Also discussed how Japan can tap into the many opportunities Kenya offers for the mutual benefit of our two countries and peoples.

Japan is the third largest source of official development assistance to Kenya, having provided our country with more than $5 billion (KSh650 billion) in the past 60 years of our strong and mutually beneficial relationship.

The support has gone into geothermal development in Olkaria and port expansion in Mombasa, among others.

Additionally, 120 Japanese companies have invested in Kenya, leveraging on our strategic location, the gateway to Eastern Africa and indeed the entire continent, expanding infrastructure and fibre optic network, and vibrant financial and capital markets.

As Kenya's economy expands and grows, our country offers many opportunities for the private sector in Japan, including in digitisation, provision of medical equipment for our universal health coverage, precision farming, e-vehicle manufacturing and green energy industrialisation, among others.

Addressed a Kenya Investment Forum, Yokohama City, Japan, where many multinational companies expressed interest in investing in our country.

Swahilipot Hub Foundation was honored to host H.E. Prof. @KindikiKithure , Deputy President of Kenya, during his visit to witness the transformative impact of technology in empowering youth. The Deputy President assessed how the hub provides income-generating opportunities through innovation, content creation, business process outsourcing, and enterprise development. This visit aligns with the government’s ambitious initiative to construct 1,450 ICT hubs across the country to create digital jobs for the youth. These efforts supplement other job creation programs, including the labour mobility program, climate works program, and the Affordable Housing Program.

The event also welcomed prominent leaders, including Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Maritime Affairs, and the Blue Economy @HassanAliJoho , Principal Secretaries Eng. @tanuijohn (ICT and the Digital Economy) and Betsy Njagi (Fisheries and the Blue Economy), Mombasa Deputy Governor Francis Thoya, Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki, and Members of the National Assembly: Zamzam Mohamed (Mombasa), Mohamed Machele (Mvita), Faisal Bader (Msambweni), and GG Kagombe (Gatundu South), along with other national and county officials, also graced the occasion.

This visit emphasized the vital role of ICT hubs like Swahilipot Hub Foundation in shaping Kenya’s digital economy, empowering the next generation, and driving innovation for sustainable development and economic growth.
