Isn't it crazy how a Colonial Officer visited parts of Uganda in 1907, then called it “the Pearl of Africa” in his 1908 book & some 118 years later, we still hold onto his words like the biggest badge of honour ever! How are we still seeking validation from the man whose role it was to hoodwink us for his King’s benefit after all we know about colonialism & such words today?
Anyway, I also wonder if Winston Churchill would say the same today after a random visit to Kampala. Perhaps his words should remind us that we have a great thing here, but one we have been so meticulous at mismanaging more than throwing it around like a flex that hasn't outlived its purpose…
Your country, as a country, is less than 70 years old, with 20-30 of those, depending on region, lost to war. That's a strange expectation to have.
Some of our current middle class is just a few years removed from open defecation and are largely superstitious

It's interesting to read how astonished explorers were to find that the Africans they encountered were equally well-travelled
Barth in 1850 met Africans in Bagirmi (Chad) who had visited Basra (Iraq), kept works of Plato, and were as inquisitive about Europe as he was abt Africa
