This evening, before we had even set up for the soup run, our founder was greeted with an extremely distressing encounter. In the middle of O'Connell street a man who had cold, sore, red, and blistered feet approached and he began explaing how his shoes had been stolen whilst he was sleeping on the streets. We could very quickly see that he was evidently a rough sleeper enduring harsh conditions. Only through the donations were we then able to provide him with new shoes, socks, tracksuits, a t-shirt, and a jacket. All which we had just bought on the spot after seeing his condition. Additionally, we were able to provide him with a sleeping bag, tent, and 3 bags of food.

This was not only a heartbreaking, but alarming incident to be greeted with. But this is the reality of the soup run. And this is the reality of the livelihood of so many people living in ireland.

As we continue to be met with such people living in extremly brutal conditions, we question those that say we are not needed; what would have happened this evening if we werent? What is the guarantee that he would have been clothed and fed tonight? He knew we would be there today and he knew that if he approached us, we would help him.

We continued to set up in the lashing rain as the line grew longer and quieter. People stood still, wet, and silent as they waited for a hot meal and some food.

Each week we tell a new story that is more worrisome than the one shared the week before. As we reflect on our founders encounter this evening and on the people standing in line silently, we become more and more aware of how many people rely on us and wait for our help. We can only hope to make a difference in someones life each week by acting with compassion and care.

Howver, we would not be able help anyone without the continued support from our volunteers and undoubtedly the Irish public.

@simonmlewis There is so little job security, in particular for those starting out. I worked with teachers who held onto PT jobs because they only had a contract for a few months and/or they may only have PT hours. Is there any other profession where the same happens after 4-6 years of study

I was in Finland and visited a small school of about 200 pupils. The staff were really pissed off about the lack of supports. They only had access to a psychologist, social worker and nurse, on site, twice a week.
