Yesterday, Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.
Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressional mandated. They've saved millions of lives. 🧵

@venturetwins@roanoke_gal Also, dependency. Dependency can look, for a while, like the condition is improving. A professional would at some point facilitate that the client starts practicing letting go and mending the trust and bonds to people around them. Tech has no reason to let go.
Not a measure of a fixed attribute called 'empathy', per se. Have we not succeeded yet in building structures that safeguard and nurture empathy between different fractions of society? That sounds like a huge, complex and meaningful issue for the 21st century. (2/2)
I think we should be curious as to what systemic issues these kinds of studies reflect. Such as the selection, training, working conditions of people in health care. (1/2)
Interesting new study on AI therapy.
Across a sample of 830 people, participants:
(1) couldn't tell the difference between ChatGPT and a human therapist,
(2) preferred responses written by ChatGPT on key psychotherapy principles like empathy

@joarhalvorsen My guess regarding EMDR is that the hypnotic trance induced provides a safe distance to explore traumatic content. Also focuses on bodily awareness which is helpful for trauma processing. Took the course and was less impressed by the models and explanations provided there.
@VagnesLars @Kat__Woods If you're being guided every step of the way, it's not your own process yet. If you develop attachment and the tech doesn't know when to detach, you also risk becoming dependent. I'm sure we can figure out how to mitigate these risks but they should be part of the conversation.
@VagnesLars @Kat__Woods For coaching yes. But then you still want to be told what to do and how to listen, be altruistic. So the AI needs to also know when to let go and not meddle with someone's process of listening inwards. If you've learned not to listen inwards, it's painful and frustrating as hell.
@RobertRMorris If you walk away from the experience with GPT-3 that man, that was an amazing session and I feel so understood, but no human could possibly be this responsive and patient and good when I express how I feel, then you may have relief, but you still didn't mend the attachment wound.
@RobertRMorris If we managed to create genuinely empathic systems, I wouldn't be too worried. What worries me is the approximation of it. A part of healing is through the experience that your pain could be held by another because in part it repairs trust.
@Scobleizer @foxmediallc A part of the puzzle is you have to already 1) be interested and/or 2) be looking for support on these issues - and emotionally unsafe individuals, families and communities often act as if mental health either doesn't exist or that signs of trauma are signs of intrinsic weakness.
@Scobleizer @foxmediallc Basically think we need both to increase access and general knowledge on these issues. AI can help increase knowledge on handling mental health issues on a low level (like Google searches already reflect) but trauma is still, often, caused, sustained and healed in relationships.
