Ya Allah ga Dr Umar Bebeji(our babban yaya),envelope him with your infinite mercy, forgive him all his shortcomings, grant him the highest rank of jannah.
A Day I Will Never Forget…
On the 21st of June, I received a message from an unfamiliar number. The sender introduced himself as Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji. Although we had never spoken before, I already knew and recognized who he was. I had seen his name on his WhatsApp profile, and in Ahmadu Bello University, the name Bebeji is one that many students especially the comrades know and respect. He served as the Student Representative Council president (2009) and was serving as Assistant Dean Faculty of Law.
He told me about their reunion of the 1995–2001 set of the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria, scheduled for July 31 in Kaduna, alongside the Passing Out Parade (POP) of their children on August 1 at NMS, Zaria. He then asked of my rates for videography and photography coverage for both events.
I replied, "Sir, whatever you consider appropriate will be acceptable to me." I said this because, although he might not have known me personally, I knew of his generosity and the positive impact he had made on the lives of many students close to me, especially the comrades in ABU and other members of the university community.
He laughed and insisted that he didn't want to be unfair to me. He asked me several times to state my price, but I continued to tell him that I had placed the knife and the meat in his hands. I simply couldn't bring myself to charge someone I regarded as an academic mentor.
On the 23rd of July, he reached out again to remind me that the event was drawing near. He also asked whether I could provide a private live-streaming service so that only members of the Ex-Boys who would not be present could watch the event online. I assured him that it was possible, and we agreed that he would provide the necessary login details for their platform for the livestream. Yet again, he reminded me that I had not submitted my bill, and yet again, I politely declined.
Two days before the event, he called to ask about my accommodation in Kaduna and offered to make arrangements for me. I thanked him and told him not to worry because I already had somewhere to stay. That simple gesture spoke volumes about the kind of person he was.
On July 31, the day of the reunion, he informed me that a driver with the ABU Faculty of Law bus would pick me up. Unfortunately, after I received the drivers’ contact from him, I couldn’t contact the driver in time, and he had already driven past my location. Dr. Bebeji called again and directed me to meet them at Lagos Roundabout in Kaduna.
From there, we went to collect the reunion shirts before proceeding to the venue. The reunion was beautiful. It was filled with laughter, games, old memories, and heartfelt moments that reminded everyone of the bond they had built over the years.
I attended the event with my niece, and together we captured memories that would last a lifetime.
Throughout the day, one thing stood out about Dr. Bebeji, his kindness. Despite meeting me for the first time, he treated both my niece and me with warmth, respect, and genuine care. He was the driving force behind the success of the reunion they had, ensuring that every detail was in place and every guest felt welcomed.
Little did anyone know that death was so close.
Ya Allah.
This morning, we were supposed to travel together from Kaduna to the NMS for the POP of their children. The plan was for me to join them in the same vehicle.
However, something changed.
As the morning went on and I noticed he hadn't called me, something quietly told me to make my own way to Zaria using a commercial vehicle instead.
While I was on the road, I received a WhatsApp message from him appreciating the 95 photographs from the reunion that I had sent the previous night. He had even posted one of them on his WhatsApp status at exactly 9:01AM this morning.
It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Dr. U.S Bebeji, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and ABUSRC President (2009/2010 Academic Session), who passed away today.
Our deepest condolences to his family and the entire ABU Zaria community🕊️
i believe in re-reading and re-watching your favourite books & movies at different stages of your life. the plot never changes, but your perspective does.
i love when people do photo dumps. like yes, please show me the mundane, like light passing through your window, a sign on the road you liked, a crying selfie, a bowl of what you cooked.
