Why do people stop talking just to avoid returning money??

So I have a childhood friend.. He bought a new phone, it broke and he urgently asked me for money I helped him. This happened in January he said he will return it in February. I didn’t even remind him because I trusted him.

Now it’s been 4 months… and when I actually needed the money, he still have not returned it.

This has happened with me multiple times I lend ₹5000–₹10000 to some people and instead of returning it... they literally stop talking so they don’t have to pay back.

I dont understand this mindset.
Has this happened with anyone else?
