Fishing tourney cheating is all over the news.
Another outrageous observation from the walleye tournament in Cleveland this weekend was the amount aquatic plants on trailers!

@punkloch Not to recreation at this point and unknown to wildlife or the rest of the ecosystem. It is more widespread than we recorded, with patches 1-2 square meters. A background member of the plant community for now. Would be good to monitor more closely - no plans from my crew yet
A new, non-indigenous plant is growing in Ohio waters near the state capitol. The discovery is a reminder never to release plants and animals; they may take hold in natural systems. https://t.co/YyjxJgrJZt

@LimnoGeek1 Potamogeton wrightii - it looks a lot like P. crispus! Wavy leaf edges, alternate arrangement. Some quick morphological differences are no serrated leaf margins like on P. crispus, and longer, wider leaves. Totally right, P. crispus is widespread in Ohio, probably in every county
@MeganWeber_AIS I like those a lot too! Do you plan to have more commissioned? I would like to ride these coattails and reach the artist too - great work, great idea!

A state endangered plant, Nuphar variegata, was found in Ashtabula Co. this year! Common in other Great Lake states, but rare in OH! Stems with "winged" compressions on the side, floating-not-emergent leaves, and reddish petal base. #AquaticPlants#NativePlant
It went from "single plant with nice flowers" to 1/2 the pond covered(!), a short report from NE Aquatic Nuisance Species Panel highlights the all-too-common invasive species story after introduction.

@BrendanSpearin We did see anglers cleaning their boats afterward - though we definitely were not there the whole event. With so many people coming and going the plants were probably dragged to the launch which made for easy hitchhikers.
#MacrophyteMonday - Water lettuce, water hyacinth, and Egeria densa, three unwanted #AquaticInvasivePlants were detected in Cleveland Metroparks last week. It takes โ๏ธ and๐ฐ to remove these plants.
Don't dump aquarium plants in wild places, compost them instead!
Hydrilla vertcillata is a plant we hope to keep contained at Mosquito. No boats that participated in a voluntary inspection had Hydrilla as a hitchhiker - milfoil, coontail, and some leafy Potamogeton were hanging from motors, axels, and trailers.
