Good morning!
Decided to kick off 2026 by getting back to writing.
For the @LRB I wrote about our morally bankrupt political and media ecosystem.
The working title for this piece was โAll Our Politicians Are Fucking Idiotsโ

Push notifications about the government working to reverse a ban on Israeli football hooligans like itโs a national crisis.
More media and political outrage in defence of racist thugs than about Israel wiping Gaza off the face of the earth.
What a nauseating era in our history.
๐จBREAKING: Hundreds arrested in Parliament Square for peaceful protest against ban of Palestine Action
When the Government is arresting people under terrorism laws for sitting peacefully in protest, something is going very wrong here in the UK.
Peaceful protest is a fundamental right. People are understandably outraged by the ongoing genocide being committed in Gaza and are entitled under international human rights law to express their horror.
Amnesty has long criticised UK terrorism law for being excessively broad, vaguely worded and a threat to freedom of expression. Today's response only further demonstrates that our concerns were justified.
Any restriction on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly must be lawful, necessary and proportionate to achieving a legitimate aim. Criminalising speech in this context is only permitted when it incites violence or advocates hatred. Expressing support for Palestine Action does not, in itself, meet this threshold.
Some politicians are using lies about asylum hotels to stir up fear and division in our communities.
The truth is, we all deserve to be safe and to feel like we belong.

Millions using foodbanks, homelessness at record levels, people unable to heat their homes, pay their rent, a climate catastrophe, genocide in Gaza. Glad our journalists and politicians are focused on the big issues like flags and toilets.
Asked if she's got a flag on display in her home, the Home Secretary says she has Union Jack bunting, St Georges flags, St Georges bunting, and Union Jack flags and tablecloths.
This is disinformation being framed as a legitimate question. None of what Gary Robertson is asking is accurate, yet serves to further embed utter nonsense about the asylum system in peopleโs minds.
Have to wonder if all those so keen to comment on Summerhall's free speech policies over the Fringe will have anything to say about this happening on the premises?
Watch as screenwriter Paul Laverty is arrested in Edinburgh in support of Palestine Action ๐จ
Laverty, whose films have twice won the Palme dโOr, was lifted by police in Edinburgh on Monday for allegedly supporting the proscribed group Palestine Action
We can't let Reform hijack football for hate.
Nigel Farageโs new football shirt is not a gimmick to laugh off, it is a weapon aimed straight at the heart of our game.

If arrests for placards were taking place in Russia and China, our media and political class would be vociferously condemning the clear authoritarianism and draconian repression.
Apparently itโs fine when itโs in Britain though.
