In July 2022, Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of “Yu-Gi-Oh!,” was found dead in the sea off Okinawa, Japan, still wearing his snorkeling gear.
He was 60.
At first, everyone believed he had died in a snorkeling accident.
He had not.
Two days earlier, a woman, her 11-year-old daughter, and a U.S. soldier had been caught in a violent rip current.
Robert Bourgeau, an Army officer and diving instructor, heard the mother screaming and ran into the sea. He managed to bring all three to safety.
What he did not know was that Takahashi had also entered the water to help. Witnesses saw him swimming toward the group before he went under the waves.
He never came back up.
