@FrankWNorris @HCFEprincipal Because if we want reliability it has to be objective marking which you cannot have with essays. So we make the choice. So ‘we’ have to decide what we prefer: reliability which would mean short answers or multi choice or the ability to demonstrate nuance which allows validity.

@FrankWNorris @HCFEprincipal I’ve been in meetings with people from Ofqual and their line is you have to choose between reliability and validity. As a system, we have chosen validity ie the grades do represent the quality of responses. But we sacrifice reliability.

@AlexJQuigley I would say no. And sometimes it’s counterproductive. Last year we had two pupils apply for the same course at the same uni. One got offered A*A*A*, the other A*A*AA. Still not sure which was harder to get. Only when F Maths is involved is 4 important (even then Increasingly not)
