@ChrisWCarney@SalSports The main reason is to legislate out any chance of the kicking team being able to “cause” a muff by being able to deflect the ball into a member of the return team. The rare situation like this where the returning team takes advantage of the “free” play is a side consequence.
@Sollozzo77@awfulannouncing Except if there is a foul by the receiving team following a first touch violation, the violation is disregarded and the play stands with the foul is enforced
It does mean that there still can’t be a turnover as that would require declining the penalty, but yardage could be worse
@automaticnba@EvanHAbrams@pfref@ActionNetworkHQ Dude they once missed the playoffs despite having the most yards gained on offense and fewest yards allowed on defense in the same season, it’s just how they are
@MarkInvicta@Super70sSports One of my favorite stats is that he has one career reception and two career receiving touchdowns in the regular season (plus another catch + TD in the playoffs)
@EaglesWin1More@Jomboy_ There is no reply on catch/no catch in the infield arc anywhere. What are you going to do, load the bases? That's not fair to the defense. Say the runner from 1st is out, which would result in the same 1st and 3rd situation with the same number of outs as if they had caught it?
@thadbrown7 … have said, people are conflating seeing the zeroes with the game being over, full stop. Broadcasts say over and over “our clock isn’t official”. Also, people are forgetting that all they had to do was stop a Hail Mary.
@thadbrown7 Unlike the NFL rulebook, which explicitly states that the stadium clock is the official clock under rule 4-1-4, the NCAA is more liberal with what it can be under 3-4-a. It probably *was* the stadium clock for this game, I don’t know if they’ve officially said. But, like you…
@thadbrown7 A lot of people are hung up on the fact that unlike the NFL, where the stadium clock is the official clock unless it malfunctions in which case it is the back judge, the NCAA decides what is the official clock. I’m sure they could replay the entire quarter and count seconds.
@TrueBloodGroups@Eltacolgando2@bdfagan Absolutely the right call, they were victims of circumstance that the guy was barely (but clearly) out of bounds AND the clock hit zero a split second before he touched the ball.
Also, don’t forget that they still only had to stop a Hail Mary to still win and failed to do so.
