It never stays “just a few chickens.”
That’s the most dangerous sentence in homesteading. You say it to keep the peace. You say it so nobody thinks you’ve lost your mind. Then the coop gets bigger, the feed bill starts acting like a car payment, a rooster develops a personality, and something tall and feathered is staring at you like it co-signed the mortgage.
What the pretty clips skip is the real ledger: 5 a.m. in the freeze, predator math at dusk, muddy boots that never quite dry, and kids who suddenly talk to animals like they’re cousins. None of that is glamorous. All of it is the point.
People keep adding animals anyway because a warm egg that morning hits different than a carton from the store, and a child who used to live on a screen learns real caution around a living thing that can peck, kick, or bolt. “Just a few” stops being a plan the day responsibility grows roots.
That’s not a shopping problem. That’s how a hobby turns into a life.
