"The storyline of the early church turns on opposition and oppression. This same Peter writes, โBeloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to youโ (1 Pet. 4:12).
For now, deluded by American history, weโre prone to think it strange. We are surprised. โGive us our country back!โ But angry, desperate reactions only show how out of step we are with the tenor of the New Testament.
Being pro-abortion should be as politically toxic as being pro-slavery. It should be impossible to get elected taking that barbaric position. If it isn't, then we're failing in the fight for the culture.
Put another way, the problem isn't that we're "too pro-life." It's that our culture is passionately pro-death. The culture โ not our conviction that all human life is sacred โ must change.
We often look at previous generations and are baffled at their blind spots, failings, and hypocrisies. How could what is obvious to us not be to them?
Then I ask: what are our blind spots that future generations will baffled by?
