The AFL’s own internal success targets were completely silent on ratings, attendances and skill levels at the time the current CBA was being negotiated in 2023.

If AFL staff aren’t incentivised to make the AFLW a success against selective metrics, what a surprise that it isn’t performing. 🙄

It tipped over a long time ago, Bren, but COVID added another sugar-hit.

One of the issues is that the interests of the mega owner/breeders aren't aligned with what's best for the sport in terms of the strategic application of prize money.

They'll say they are, but they aren't. And most elected officials and appointed manages are too scared to say so.

Racing in this country still adopts a hand-to-mouth approach that is completely unsustainable, especially given the increasing costs trainers incur to run their businesses.

Great thread on an overlooked topic.

To add a bit to the topic, there are two big changes coming (subject to where the 2nd round of consultation lands on the proposed new AML/CTF Rules) that will materially impact a whole lot of people.

1. As of 1 July 2026, accountants, lawyers and real estate agents will have essentially the same Know Your Customer obligations as banks do. And for real estate agents, this obligation is proposed to extend to buyers (ie not just the agent’s vendor client), which I think will create havoc (at least initially) in the real estate sector.

2. The scope of Politically Exposed Persons is being expanded to include all local government Councillors - and by extension all past Councillors, all their family members and close business associates. People falling within these categories (myself included) will quickly end up on an international PEP screening list.

This is without question the most enthralling final round of a Masters I’ve ever experienced.

One thing Victoria does very very well is bushfire management.
Within minutes of a fire starting just north of our place, a water-bombing helicopter was dispatched from near Ballarat to help bring it under control.
Local CFA crews on the ground too.
I know there’s always a need for more and newer equipment, better maintenance, etc - but the volunteers in rural brigades are sensational at making the most of what they’ve got.
