The flag that Rick Monday rescued 50 years ago today is headed to Cooperstown!
OTD in 1976, Monday, a Cubs outfielder and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, grabbed an American flag from two protesters who had run onto the field at Dodger Stadium and attempted to burn it.
Monday, the longtime Dodgers broadcaster who played 19 years in the Major Leagues, was a two-time All-Star and a World Series champion, has often been asked about the moment.
“If that’s all you’re ever remembered for, that’s not a bad thing at all,” Monday told MLB Network in 2016.
Monday still owns the flag and it will be on loan to the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration. In addition, Monday will be honored on July 25 during induction weekend.
🇺🇸 50 years ago today, Rick Monday saved the American flag from burning at Dodger Stadium
In the bottom of the fourth inning, two protesters from Missouri (father and son) ran onto the field, spread out the flag, doused it with lighter fluid, and attempted to set it on fire.
Rick Monday, the Cubs' center fielder at the time, ran over, grabbed the flag before it could be lit, and brought it to the Dodgers' dugout.
The crowd started signing "God Bless America" and the next inning when Monday came to bat, he received a standing ovation and the scoreboard read,
"RICK MONDAY... YOU MADE A GREAT PLAY..."
RICK MONDAY: "From time to time people ask, 'Well are are you are you upset because you spent 19 seasons in the major leagues and you're known for primarily stopping two people from burning the flag.?'
If that's all you're known for, it's not a bad thing at all. I think it solidified the thought process of hundreds of thousands of people that represented this country in fine fashion. Many of them lost their lives."
