Journalists reaching out to the people they are writing about is their “professional obligation.”
I commend the work of @propublica reporters.

I tell anyone who asks about this moment in journalism some version of this: You need to support the kind of journalism you want to see in the world. Because if you don’t, it might not exist in the world much longer.
And the reality right now is the thing people seem to want to pay for — in the politics space at least — is hyper-partisans telling them what they want to hear.
Which creates at least the lure of a perverse incentive structure — in which you are creating content because you know people will like it and they will, in turn, be willing to pay you to do more of it.
The reality of being an independent news creator is this: You don’t make a salary. The only money you do make is when people pay to subscribe (or, in the case of YouTube, when you get enough subscribers to make money off of Google Ad Sense.
Which means that when you write something or record something and you have the analytics staring you in the face that show that you gained a shit ton — that’s a technical measurement — of paid subscribers, human nature being what it is there is a strong temptation to give people more of what they want.
The truth about this new independent world is that the incentive structure is all screwed up. What people most easily pay for — and, again, this is specific to politics as I have no experience in other topic areas — is content that affirms what they already think. Trump is either the worst human ever or the greatest president ever.
Anyone with a brain quickly grasps that the best way to build audience — and financial security — is to give the people what they want. Which is why the vast majority of the most successful independent creators in politics are either on the far left or the far right.
I am not. I chose a different path. Which doesn’t make me some sort of martyr. Or some amazing person who has chosen to forego profits for the good of capital “J” journalism.
What I am is someone who has never been — nor will ever be — comfortable always landing on the same political side. I never followed politics before I became a reporter in my 20s. I wasn’t an activist. Ever. And so, the lens I see politics through is a pure journalistic one. Which means calling it how I see it — always.
I spoke with a handful of Indiana University alumni last week who pulled donations following the university's handling of its student paper. One donor cancelled $1.5M in bequests, and a former football player paused $300K in contributions.

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our paper. Upon pushback, IU fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision. Letter from the editors to come.

On this day 25 years ago, Trooper Ted Foss was killed while protecting others on Minnesota’s roads. His legacy lives on through the Ted Foss Move Over Law.

Once upon a time I was an intern @WCCO shadowing @AdamDuxter on a summer fun story.
I was confused why Adam was so excited. I mean we were at the pool of all places.
After about 4 months at my small market station, covering some tough stories, all I can say is I get it now.
