Simplenya :

Investor meminjam yen at low rates (suku bunga Jepang ~0%, termasuk yang paling rendah di dunia), lalu invest di asset yang menghasilkan return lebih tinggi dari biaya peminjamannya (Cost of borrowing).

Asset apa? Ya banyak bisa crypto, saham, obligasi, dll.

Tujuannya adalah untuk mendapatkan profit dari spread interest rates. Kalau 1 asset bisa hasilin return 5%, dengan biaya cost of borrowing 0.1%. Seorang trader bisa profit: 5%-0.1% = 4.9%

Tapi masalahnya, return ini akan diberikan di market luar (contoh: US)
Jadi alurnya seperti ini: JPY -> USD -> Asset

Hal ini akan berjalan mulus kalau BOJ (Bank of Japan) tidak melakukan tindakan diluar ekspektasi.

Namun yang terjadi, minggu lalu BOJ menaikkan suku bunga ke 0.25% (tanpa warning).

Dampaknya apa?
1. JPY menguat 📈
2. Cost of borrowing juga naik 📈

JPY (stronger) -> USD (weaker) -> Asset (weaker)

Risk asset seperti saham dan crypto terkena imbasnya.

Karena banyak investor/ trader akan menjual posisi mereka, untuk cover loan mereka, lebih baik Repay dengan sedikit kerugian daripada kerugian bertambah besar.

Tapi apa yang membuat ini tambah besar?

Mau repay JPY? Artinya harus beli JPY alhasil demand JPY naik jadinya JPY tambah kuat lagi. Kerugian Investor/ trader bertambah tapi mau gimana?! (istilahnya cut loss aja lah drpd tambah rugi)

Jadi personally, I think ini yang terjadi kenapa market turunnya cepet banget kemarin dan mengalami Flash Dump. 📉
