I feel like I’ve said this before but idk. In my personal opinion, if Ilya died that day on the plane, Shane would not have been able to return to hockey/live out his life normally (even if quietly grieving). I honestly think people who believe this are the same people who desperately want Shane to be annoyed/not as in love with Ilya and Ilya is with Shane (even though their equal and undying love for one another is painfully obvious). While Shane may have been the one to encourage the more private/hidden relationship for longer, to suggest he would be able to have the love of his life prematurely and traumatically die and then carry on normally is truly insane. I believe he would’ve never had the same comfortability for flying. I believe he would’ve never been able to step out onto the ice without constantly remembering everything he lost and everything he will never have. And I believe he would have told the public about his and Ilya’s relationship. Not because he wants to publicly grieve, but because we as humans find comfort in expressing grief through the love that outlasts the lover we lost. I think people just really like to make Shane seem emotionless and robotic in ways that are oftentimes disturbing and offensive. Ilya was Shane’s person. I don’t think he would have ever been able to explore another romantic relationship honestly. But, that’s just my opinion.
