I saw a pretty petite lady at her mother’s shop today. From a distance, she really caught my eye, so I walked into the shop to buy one or two things, hoping I’d get the chance to talk to her and maybe ask for her number.

Unknown to me, the woman had been watching the way I looked at her from one corner of the shop. Suddenly, she shouted, “Boda, e je fi Omo eleyi sile, onibaje ni, kodeniwa”

This means: “Brother, you’d better stay away from this girl. She’s spoilt and has a bad character.”

The moment I heard that, I immediately changed my mind. I paid for what I bought and left.

On my way back, I passed through the same area again. This time, the girl was alone in the shop. She called me over and said I shouldn’t mind what the woman had said earlier because she wasn’t her biological mother. According to her, the woman deliberately chases away any man she notices trying to get close to her. She also told me she’s almost 25 years old.

She then explained that her biological mother died when she was 13. After her father remarried, her stepmother had been maltreating her and her siblings ever since.

I genuinely felt sorry for her. I could tell she was expecting me to ask for her number after hearing her side of the story, but I didn’t.

As I walked away, one thought stayed with me: if I were ever in her father’s position, I wouldn’t remarry if I already had a child. Stories like hers remind me that some women can be incredibly cruel.

Do not do things simply because everyone else is doing them.

Do not envy people who are doing better than you. Be genuinely happy for them while working patiently towards your own goals. Someone else’s progress does not diminish your own potential.

Never join the “education is a scam” clique. Education is not a scam. If you cannot afford formal schooling, find other ways to learn and develop yourself. Learn a skill, acquire knowledge, and invest in something that can improve your future.

As a lady, do not get pregnant for a man who has not shown genuine commitment to you. Be careful about tying your future to someone who has not demonstrated that he is ready to take responsibility.

And as young people, we should consciously stay away from fraud. Yahoo Yahoo is not the way. Quick money may look attractive, but the consequences can follow you for years and inflict lasting pain on your life.

Your future is worth more than temporary validation, quick money, or trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing.

And lastly, don’t vote for the APC in the next election.
