Clueless Seyi Makinde.
Tonight, a collective sigh of relief echoes across Nigeria. The 44 schoolchildren and teachers stolen from Oriire, Oyo State, have finally been rescued. They are alive. They are safe. But let us be unforgivingly clear: the triumph belongs entirely to the multi-agency security forces, the special operatives, the Federal Government, the people of Nigeria, and the local hunters who braved the wilderness to bring those children home.
The credit most certainly does not belong to our Worst Person in Nigeria Today: Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Because while heroes were risking their lives to rescue those children, what was Governor Makinde doing? He was at a political meeting in faraway Bauchi to rewrite this tragedy about himself. Let me quote his jaw-dropping statement, exactly:
βFor seven years as Oyo State governor, we did not witness such an incident in my state. I declared to run for the presidency at 4 p.m., and by 9 a.m. the following morning, children were abducted in Oyo State.β
Sir! Governor Makinde! Do you hear those words? While those innocent children were facing weeks of absolute terror, your knee-jerk instinct was to pull out a stopwatch and calculate the time elapsed since your presidential campaign launch? Fifteen hours! That was your focus! Not the trauma of the victims, but the total audacity of a criminal syndicate to disrupt your 2027 rollout timeline! This is the very definition of cluelessness.
To look at a mass abduction and view it not as a failure of your duty as Chief Security Officer, but as a coordinated, fifteen-hour political ambush meant to derail your presidential campaign! What were you insinuating, Governor? That highly organized kidnappers checked their feeds at 4:00 p.m., saw your declaration, and rushed to raid schools by sunrise just to derail your presidential ambition?
And then, of course, the comedy of errors expands. Enter Peter Obi. Yes, that Peter. The same Peter Obi who walked out of your ill-conceived Amala Convention. Rushing to the press to weep on your behalf, profoundly shocked that President Tinubu had not called the Oyo State Governor since the abduction.
But in his haste to play the sympathetic defender, Mr Obi accidentally exposed the utter helplessness of your entire dynamic. Obi bragged that back when he was Governor of Anambra, the moment an erosion hit a village at 2:00 a.m., or when an armed robbery occurred, or when an "exam special centre" failed, he was the one who picked up the phone to call the President! Think about the staggering hypocrisy on display here.
By trying to defend you, Obi inadvertently proved your cluelessness. Yet, you both expect the Commander-in-Chief to chase down a silent, sulking state governor who is busy campaigning in Bauchi! Kidnapping is a byproduct of the successes our security agencies are having over terrorism.
As you of all people should know, squeezed terrorists are turning to kidnapping for quick cash. Kidnappers do not check your campaign itinerary before they strike. They do not operate on your electoral calendar.
Governor Makinde, the children are back and thank God for that. But they were saved despite your narrative, not because of it.
A real leader shows humility and grit. A clueless leader uses a tragedy to audition for Aso Rock.
Good night, and good luck.
