The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Korea announced on the 18th that it is launching this year's Representation in Korea brand campaign '유난해' together with Lee Chanhyuk of the sibling duo AKMU.
The campaign name '유난해' is a shortened form of "Be with UNHCR" (유엔난민기구와 함께 해). It reinterprets the cynical gaze toward people who speak out on refugee issues as 'making a fuss' (유난스럽다/yunanseureopda) into a confident and valuable persistence.
The campaign calls for public interest and solidarity with forcibly displaced people around the world, while also raises questions about society's perception of those who support refugee issues.
UNHCR explained that through this campaign, it hopes to spread the message that empathizing with others' suffering and taking action is by no means excessive zeal, but rather a special and beautiful form of solidarity that makes our society warmer.
In comments shared with UNHCR, Lee Chanhyuk said, "Helping someone and empathizing with the world's pain sometimes receives the gaze of 'making a fuss'."
"However, I believe that this very 'fussiness' - steadfastly holding onto one's convictions without being swayed by others' opinions - is the most powerful force for changing the world." He continued, "I hope more people will join this '유난한' journey together with UNHCR."
The album [FLOWERING] released by AKMU last April includes a song called 'Festival of Refugees'.
To watch the campaign video or to participate in supporting refugees, you can visit the UNHCR Representation in Korea's official website (https://t.co/jd40iISckg) and Instagram.
The UNHCR Representation in Korea stated, "This campaign will be introduced through various digital platforms such as TV, radio, YouTube, and social network sservices (SNS) starting today," and added, "We expect that Lee Chanhyuk's original perspective and the ripple effect of his message will play a big role in lowering the public's psychological barrier toward refugees."
