@johnhboyer My philosophy is let the student use AI; but assessment is conducted by VIVA VOCE. In a booth with none of their notes or technology. The AI gives an Oxbridge style assessment and checks whether the assembled essay is a good one and how well students understand the concepts.

@jackcalifano Enshittification not withstanding, AI will produce generally reasonably accurate assessments. If something is critical or requires additional verification it is possible to run it through an alternative AI or go back to primary sources and check it through valid channels.

@RogersHistory With unhappy children & a lack of focus, direction and even a moral compass in so many schools; & in the face of increasing AI in education (has its place) this might be the right way forward. Would prefer a different term, life coaching always seems like snake oil.

@tombennett71 In my experience the best schools have an established disciplinary architecture where students know where they stand. Reaching this point is essential; when it is reached the disciplinary apparatus actually ends up getting rarely used.

@tombennett71 Part of it is that teaching becomes natural after a while, and even a skilled practitioner doesn’t feel as if they’re doing anything special, but they are. When somebody watches your lesson they can reveal to you all the things that you are naturally doing & not thinking about.

@tombennett71 I’ve been v lucky to work in many schools where there is robust discipline. Discipline therein isn’t heavy and rarely dealt because children know boundaries. My last school had diabolical behaviour. Change is needed at SLT level; it’s most often not the teacher’s fault.

@tombennett71 Children will always fight about boundaries but they actually want them not that they will ever admit to it. It’s the adult that reflects on their childhood with positivity saying, they were tough with me then but I needed it.

@tombennett71 This is potentially the Luddite perspective. Essays will be written even if AI. Assessment would be by AI viva voce in a booth where the student takes no IT or notes. They have to defend the essay even if they didn’t write it. We lose student voice but gain assessment efficacy.

@RogersHistory @ShakinthatChalk What I did like was that the troublesome children were playing Fortnite and pretending to be online (“Hello John … are you there?’ … ‘Can you repeat the question please?’) and the conscientious ones had their voice and their time.

@HKW1981 @tombennett71 @acatfromgreece Agreed, but this is a separate issue to ensuring that teaching those whose behaviour is not disruptive is not in self disrupted.
