The first Kannada inscription is at Halmidi, but 500 years before that, the Cisttanavasal inscription in Tamil Nadu, dated to the 1st century BCE, should be considered a Kannada inscription. This is because the words inscribed on it, such as "Posil", "Kavudi", "Erumai", "Thayiyar", "Nadu", and "Ilayar", are Kannada words, as acknowledged by Iravatham Mahadevan himself. Therefore, it would be the first inscription in Kannada and Kannada-Brahmi script. Moreover, it was commissioned by Jain monks, indicating that Jainism spread from Karnataka.

We request Kannada historians to raise their voices about these facts. 🙏🏼 By not claiming many things, today, Kannada is being portrayed as a living, ancient language in the Tamil world.

The text discusses the potential claim that the Cisttanavasal inscription in Tamil Nadu might be an earlier example of Kannada language and script than the Halmidi inscription, which is commonly considered the first Kannada inscription.
