Large parts of India are dirty. Large parts of India are unsafe.

People like to post random videos of homeless people on the streets in America. And then claim it's the same everywhere (no it isn't). Or cherrypick statics about crimes against women, and claim that things aren't "that bad". That there is a "foreign agenda" to malign India.

Random tourists don't have "agendas" against your country. In fact they could have gone to many better parts of the world, but chose to come to India, to experience the rich culture that they've probably been told of.

These are all "copes". It is lying to yourself about your country.

If you have ever talked to any female friend, or your mother, sister, or wife, you know exactly how unsafe India is for women. If you've travelled around the country, you know for a fact that India is dirty across large parts. Deep down, every Indian knows these facts are true.

Yes, we are building shiny IT parks and great sea-bridges, and have stellar digital public goods, but you cannot build a happy society without safety and dignity of living. If there is garbage around everywhere, and you're always anxious while travelling, many of the other things really don't matter.

At the society level, we have moved ahead on many fronts but the progress on cleanliness and safety hasn't been as sharp as we would have liked. We need to do a lot more, and a lot quickly.

If we want people to come to India, and Indians to not move out, we must make an India which they would love to visit and live in.
