The SC’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy.
These voiceless souls are not “problems” to be erased.
Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe - without cruelty.
Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion.
We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand.
#WATCH | Delhi: On SC order to send all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters within 8 weeks, PETA India Advocacy Associate, Shaurya Agrawal says, "This particular order is impractical, illogical and according to the animal birth control rules, also illegal. The Delhi government had 24 years to implement these sterilisation programs, implement the ABC rules...Delhi has 10 lakh dogs. Housing them in shelters is impractical. It is very difficult. This is going to create chaos and problems. Removal of dogs is inhumane, is cruelty in itself, and the conditions within the shelters are going to be very bad...We are exploring all our legal avenues. And in the past, we have met the Delhi government and have urged them to implement the ABC rules properly and the sterilisation programs in the city."
VIDEO | Animal Rights Activist Maneka Gandhi spoke on the Supreme Court's order to remove all stray dogs from the Delhi-NCR streets within 8 weeks. She says, "This judgment is a suo motu case, which means nobody complained; the judge took it up on his own. We were expecting something like this anyway. Now, if this order is to be followed, it would mean rounding up three lakh dogs in Delhi and placing them in centres. The Delhi government would need to find 1,000–2,000 centres, as too many dogs together would fight. They would first need land, then construct facilities within eight weeks, costing at least Rs 4-5 crore, with caretakers, feeders, and watchmen to prevent escapes. This judgment seems to lack rational thought and stems from anger. Strangely, the order is based on a newspaper report of a child killed by dogs, but the family has confirmed the child died of meningitis."
